All Newsletters : June 1999 : First PHIND for us

First PHIND for us
Now an index for all of us

After the successful launch of PHIND (Personal History Index for former Child Migrants to Catholic Homes), we are pleased to be able to tell you that The Department of Family and Children's Services, i.e. the State family welfare department is compiling a similar (though not so detailed) index of ALL people who came to WA as child migrants.

This means that children who came to WA under Fairbridge Catholic, Anglican, and Uniting Church schemes will all be included in one index, managed by the Department of Family and Children's Services.

The purpose of the index, like PHIND, is to assist people who came here as child migrants track down the records that are held on them by government and church agencies.

The index is being given very high priority by the Department, with the Director-General steering the whole process in the interests of getting the index up and running in the quickest possible time. It is envisaged that the index will be accessible sometime in the next few months. It will be launched with some fanfare, probably before the next C-BERSS Ex-Press, so watch your local press for details.

Dr Debra Rosser from our Management Committee is working with representatives from Fairbridge and other Homes to ensure the index is as helpful as possible.
