The Selected Message

Born 7 August 1940 at St Vennera, Malta died 4 December 2003.

Amongst the first group of Child Migrants from Malta, Charles was nine when he was sent to Australia on board the Ocean Triumph on 22 April 1950.

Charles was placed at Bindoon and spoke to family friend Leslie Wilkie of the suffering he experienced there.

Charles’ brother Brian was also placed in Bindoon when he arrived in 1953, returning to Malta in 1958 when he left.
Charles’ happiest time in life was with his wife before she died of cancer. Charles raised their daughter Carmella from the age of four months on his own.

When he left Bindoon, Charles was already experienced in the building trade and for many years was very happy working as a skilled tradesman and supervisor until his own health failed. In 1993 Charles had coronary bypass surgery and he also suffered from diabetes.
Charles enjoyed darts, bowling and golf and won many trophies. He was a generous, fun loving and happy man and made the most of the time he spent with family and friends and always laughed and smiled.

To Leslie Wilkie and her family, Charles was not only a neighbour of 12 years standing but their very dearest friend and honorary grandfather to their daughter Rochelle. He went with them to soccer and football functions, mouse racing nights, family celebrations and was “one of the gang!”
Leslie says “It was an absolute honour to have known such a gentle man and our memories of him will always be treasured”.
